Wi-Fi equipped handsets to double through 2010

by Brian Osborne

Mobile phones which offer a dual mode of both Cellular and Wi-Fi service have been growing in popularity. According to ABI Research, they believe that demand for dual-mode phones will be so great that shipments will double from 2008 through 2010. Michael Morgan, an industry analyst, states that over the past year, “there has been an explosion of Wi-Fi capable phones”.

Just because a phone has Wi-Fi doesn’t necessarily mean that people are using it. HTC’s mobile phone lineup consists of 80% which are Wi-Fi equipped, buy only 10% of users are actually using the Wi-Fi connectivity. Compare that to 75% of iPhone users who utilize a Wi-Fi connection because of the ease of use offered by the handheld. The predictions made by ABI Research are based on a new research study called “Wi-Fi Capable Handsets“.

As prevelant as Wi-Fi is becoming I would be shocked if ABI Research’s prediction doesn’t come true. I have an iPod touch and I use the heck out of it’s Wi-Fi connectivity. If I had a mobile phone with Wi-Fi connectivity I would probably use it even more to browse online. Wi-Fi is definitely the way to go for most mobile phone manufacturers.
