Samsung SGH-J700

Samsung’s J700 is fairly widely available. You can pick it up on O2 pay and go and Vodafone pay as you talk in black, but only Orange has the purple version. This purple SGH-J700 is available on Orange pay as you go for £69.99, and Orange supplied me with a review sample.

This is a slider handset and its looks are pretty standard in comparison to some of Samsung’s mobiles. It doesn’t have a touchscreen and isn’t amazingly tiny, nor does it have a fancy mega-sophisticated camera and in fact it doesn’t claim to be super-duper at anything. ‘Style with substance’ is the phrase used to describe the SGH-J700. I’d certainly go with the ‘style’ part of the equation as the phone looks rather nice albeit in a predictable and understated kind of way. I’m not so sure about the ‘substance’, though. What is on offer in terms of specifications is at the lower end of mid-range.

As a tri-band handset with GPRS and EDGE you aren’t going to expect to be blasting away at web page reading and mobile email very much, but then the smallish screen measuring 2in across the diagonal isn’t screaming out to be used for such visually rich activity.
In fact, the screen’s 128 x 160 pixels are the first sign that this mobile drops in at the lower end of mid-range. When I did try some web browsing the resolution was such that I gave the attempt up fairly quickly. The screen is just not up to it.

The other dead giveaway as you glance at the specifications is the camera. At 1.3-megapixels this is actually more entry-level than mid-range. As you would expect its performance isn’t wonderful. Over exposure is its key problem I discovered and it is a biggie.

The coloured dish, photographed under normal household lighting conditions is possibly the most over exposed I’ve ever seen this particular shot. The background is meant to be white, but this phone’s lens has gone overboard and the dish’s colours are rather washed out as a result of the overexposure.

Outdoors, the flower heads are simply a blob of white rather than distinguishably individual. The chair fares better, and is really quite good compared to the other photos I took with this phone. The camera’s lens is hidden under the slide mechanism when not in use which helps to protect it from scratches. It has a large and serviceable self-portrait mirror, but no flash.

As sliders go the SGH-J700 is a neat and tidy example. It weighs 92g which shouldn’t trouble your pocket. At just 15mm thick and 48mm wide, its 99.5mm of height are the only real let-down. There appears to be a lot of unused space above and below the screen which leaves you feeling that maybe Samsung could have shaved off a few mm of height. When opened the phone is about 135mm tall. The slider mechanism itself is smooth but there is nothing to push or pull against on the front fascia to open and close the slide. So you are left either thumbing the screen which can cause a grease problem or using the navigation wheel or lower buttons for purchase which can cause unwanted selections to be made.

The numberpad which lies under the slide is flat, its keys separated by very low raised ridges. They keys are large and I didn’t find using them a challenge. With the slide closed you have a fairly standard arrangement of front buttons. The two softmenu keys are round blobs that sit either side of the navigation pad. They don’t look very pretty to my eyes, but they work well enough.

The navigation pad itself looks as though it should be one of Samsung’s wheely specials - the kind you can rotate under a finger as well as press up, down, left and right. But only the latter functions are supported.

Beneath the navigation pad and way too close to the bottom of the handset for my personal taste are the Call, End and cancel buttons. I tend to find buttons so close to the bottom edge of a mobile’s front fascia a little awkward to use at times.Orange’s home screen has been built into this handset, which means you scroll vertically through a set of four menu groupings to get to applications and features that the company thinks you’ll use a lot.

The device main menu is connected to the left softkey so you can get out to everything on the handset easily. The frequently used Contacts application is connected to the right softkey.

There isn’t a great deal of built in memory, though 10MB may be enough for many users. If you want more a microSD card slot is present on the left edge of the phone. An obvious use is music storage, and here, despite the sheer irritation of Samsung’s proprietary headset connector, I have to admit to a pleasant surprise. The phone provided 12 hours 15mins of continuous music played from a microSD card. Even then it was not finished, and the phone stayed alive and voice call capable for about three more hours.

There is an FM radio on board and it’ll self tune 25 stations. As ever the antenna is not built into the handset so you need to use the proprietary headset.

Other apps include a calendar, mobile email, voice recorder, memo, world clock, calculator, timer, stopwatch, five alarms, unit converter, and a few games. There is also an image editor which lets you play a little with photos you shoot. It lets you apply some nice effects to photos and do things like add emoticon stamps and tiny clip art.

iFake: China unleashes new mini-iPhone knockoff

Perhaps the oddest thing about the latest faux iPhone from China is that it actually could have been an interesting product without all the Apple fakery. Although the CECT m188 doesn't sport the Apple logo on its body, the design is all iPhone shrunken down to the size of a credit card. Even the box the phone comes in mimics the iPhone, working hard to duplicate that new Apple product experience. But the differences are plenty, including the ability to use a docked-based phone keypad, a touch screen stylus, dual SIM cards, FM radio and video recording.

At least those are the claims made by the stores selling the device, but if you read some user comments it appears that you may be gambling with your cash (the unit sells for $103 here) if you decide to ride the fake train. Interestingly, while the makers of the device diligently kept the Apple logo off the packaging and hardware, when the phone's software starts up you're met with the standard Apple logo that you'd see on the iPhone. You can check out video of the CECT m188 in action here.

Sony Ericsson W580i Cell Phone

The W580i is one of Sony Ericsson's line of Walkman-branded handsets. These music focused phones are popular globally, but few of them have made it to the United States. The W580i is one of the few that has, carried by AT&T. And it's a good pick for the carrier; it provides a decent set of media features that is on par with many more expensive handsets. True to its Walkman billing, the W580i's music player does a very good job, but it didn't last that long playing back music; we measured the battery life at 5 hours and 32 minutes. That's enough for everyday use, but is significantly shorter than other phones. Video playback was also a disappointment; the screen is too small for comfortable viewing, and the controls are awkward to use. The 2-megapixel camera takes decent photos, but the audio quality in calls could have been better. We did find the interface to be surprisingly responsive, and we liked the capabilities of the Web browser, which is good enough for casual browsing.

The phone is small and cute, but feels plasticky, leading to concerns about its durability. The plastic case and exposed screen could both be easily scratched. We liked the W580i's integration of MMS and SMS, but the lack of an e-mail client and a small keypad that can be difficult to type on probably doesn't make this a good pick for big texters. Despite these drawbacks, the W580i offers a lot of good features for the price; it is available for $79.99 from AT&T with a two-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Tour & Design - The W580i is a small and cute handset that suffers from a plasticky feel and concerns about durability.

Audio Quality - The W580i didn't perform the best in our audio tests, with some aberrant results in the sound received.

Imaging - The W580i's 2-megapixel camera does a reasonable job, although it is a little lacking in the feature department.

Making/Receiving Calls - The W580i is easy to use and provides a solid feature set for calls.

Messaging - The W580i is not a good messaging phone, lacking an e-mail client and with a small keypad that's difficult to type on.

Organizer - The W580i's organizer is very basic. Don't expect it to replace a PDA or smartphone.

Multimedia - The W580i has an excellent music player, but does less well in the video playback department.

Software - We found the W580i's operating system to be very responsive, and the browser was surprisingly well featured.

Battery Life - The W580i could have done better in battery life, with music playback time our biggest area of concern.

Connectivity - No 3G is a problem, but Bluetooth capabilities are very good.

Hardware - We would have liked to see a bigger screen, and we had problems with the keypad, but otherwise the phone is solid.

Other Features - You can use the W580i as a dial-up modem for your computer, but there is no GPS or PTT functionality.

Value & Comparisons - At $79.99 with a two-year contract, the W580i is an excellent value.

Samsung 629 Leaked

The Samsung 629 is spotted at a Chinese website. The rumor said that the Samsung 629 has dual-band functionality of GSM and CDMA, which means it is capable of running in both GSM and CDMA networks. It is kind a weird breed, if the Samsung 629 is capable of doing so. Besides that, the rumor also said that the phone features a 2.7-inch LCD Touchscreen that will produce a vibration when touched, an FM tuner, a built-in 3MP camera with video support.
